This time of year is a great time to give back to your community and the organizations that exist to help those in need. If you would like to help, here are some ideas:

* Angel Tree gifts provide Christmas for children who have a parent or parents in prison. There are Angel Trees set up all over the country where you can choose an angel and shop for a gift, or a cash donation can be given through their website.

* Local charities are like feet on the ground in times of crisis, and they can struggle without a budget to advertise needs. If you have a favorite cause you may want to check for a local chapter or even a private charity and see if they have any needs or are accepting donations.

* Christmas stores for those in need. A charity local to me collects toys and games, used and new all year to provide a Christmas store for the needy. Families can come and pick gifts for their children to open on Christmas. If you have a Christmas store near you, can you volunteer to help gift wrap? Can you make a donation of gently used items?

* Non-profit animal shelters are always in need of cash for veterinary services, food, and medicine for the animals that they help. But, another way to help is to call and check on other needs like old towels, blankets, cleaning supplies, and opportunities to volunteer.

* Red Kettle collection benefits the Salvation Army and every penny helps. Gather up your loose change and drop it in the kettle the next time you’re out.

December is a great time to give back and reach out to the community around you. Share in the experience with your family and take a few moments to record how everyone felt about being a blessing to others.
