Welcome to the Sunday Spotlight. One Sunday each month we like to take a moment to get to know one of the amazing members of our gallery a little better. In putting together our bi-weekly Sunday Show-Off slideshow, I noticed that karenhugh has been posting a ton of fantastic layouts recently. Just take a look at this stunner she created using Tuscan Fall.
Karen was kind enough to take some time out to answer a few questions for us.
Hi Karen, to get things started, could you tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a mother of 6 and grandmother of 10. My husband and I are both retired and love to spend time together. I love photography, reading, traveling, scrapping and spending time with my family. One strange quirk I have is that I don’t like chocolate. I would give days off my life, however, for cashews and caramel. On a more serious note I am a cancer survivor. I had a left lower lobectomy for a very rare lung cancer (carcinoid neuroendocrine tumor) in 2009 and I am currently in remission. Hooray! Every day is so important to me and every image that I scrap has some meaning for me. I feel that I am scrapping my family’s history that will live for many years.
It is to great to hear that you are in remission. I’m sure the support of your husband, children, and grandchildren helped you through your battle. So Karen, how did you get into digi?
I was never a serious paper scrapper. I love the computer and Photoshop so when I came across digi-scrapbooking it was love at first sight. For a while I was collector. I bought and collected kits like a stamp collector collects stamps. Finally, I gained confidence and started to use my kits and now I can’t stop. I just finished a 65 page photobook of scrapped pages of our grandchildren swimming in our backyard pool over a 10 year span. Every time I look at it, it brings me such joy. Scrapping adds that extra touch that helps a photo become a memory.
That is such a great way to explain the difference between photo albums and scrapbooks! So since you admit to being a bit of a kit collector, I have to ask, what is your favorite Trixie kit?
It’s hard to say which kit is my favorite. Usually it’s the latest one I bought. I must say though that I have a very soft spot in my heart for Sunshine Day. All I have to do is look at that kit and it brings a smile to my face.
That kit really is a great one. It is so sunny and summery. And how did you find Trixie Scraps?
I found Trixie Scraps on Gotta Pixel and I now own almost every kit.
Wow, sounds like you’re a few up on me. So with all of these kits that you own, what do you like to scrap about and what inspires your layouts?
Mainly I scrap about our life. We have a large family and I love photography so there is never a shortage of photos to scrap. I also take lots of landscape photos and enjoy scrapping them. I find that trips are lots of fun to scrap. You get to relive the holiday as you scrap. Kits really inspire me, especially the paper. I love it when there are lots of different but complementary patterns that I can use in a template.
It’s really cool that you love to scrap landscape photos, as those are pictures I often have a hard time with. Having a lot of versatile papers in a kit is definitely a bonus. And what do you listen to while you scrap?
For years I have listened to soft rock/easy listening music but over the summer I really started to enjoy “New Country”. That’s what I listen to when I scrap unless it’s past 8 pm, then I scrap while my husband and I watch TV.
Karen, now it is time for you to show off for us a little bit. Could you share with us your favorite layout you’ve created with a Trixie Scraps kit?
I chose this page because it’s a little different from my usual page.
What stunning fall foliage. I really like the photos you captured in the film strip too. Alright, not comes the fun ones. If you were trapped on a desert island what three things would you want to have with you?
If I could have 3 things on a desert island my first choice would be a boat, but that’s cheating, isn’t it 🙂 I would definitely want my computer with WiFi of course. My e-reader, I would be lost without it. Finally I would like a freezer (these 3 things can be fantasies right?) filled with Butter Tart Ice Cream. Now that would be the height of decadence but if I’m on a desert island who would know but me and I’m not telling.
That sounds like quite a “dessert” island. I completely hear you on the e-reader, I’d be lost without mine too. Karen, we just have one last question for you today. If you could have dinner with anyone, famous or not, living or dead, real or fiction, who would it be and why?
My first thought is to answer my husband because he really is the person I would most want to spend time with anywhere, anytime but I guess that’s not really in the spirit of the question. So…other than my husband I would choose Robert Kennedy. He is one of the most fascinating historical figures to me. I admired him so much as an impressionable teenager in the 60’s and was devastated when he was assassinated. He was such an honorable man and was involved in world politics at a very interesting time.
Sounds like there would be some interesting dinner conversation.
Karen, thanks so much for taking the time to share a little bit about yourself with us today. I can’t wait to see more of your gorgeous layouts in the gallery.
Be sure to check out Karen‘s layouts in the gallery and leave her some love this week. And be sure to keep sharing your layouts with us in the gallery. You never know, we may chose you for our next Sunday Spotlight.
