My grandma was recently moved to a retirement home and because of that my mom and her siblings are slowly cleaning out the family home. Because of this, my mom gave me a scrapbook calendar I had given to my grandma in 2002. I looked through it and was kind of embarrassed for myself. I was definitely inexperienced and lacked some design skills. I decided that the perfect thing for Masters Monday today would be flipping a layout.
I’m sure most of you are familiar with the term ‘flipping a house’, why can’t we flip a layout? We can take what’s old and what doesn’t work anymore and make something beautiful out of it.
I started scrapbooking in 2000 after my oldest child was born. I didn’t have anyone really around me that scrapbooked, so I went off of other inspiration I saw. Like I said before, I had no idea about design skills and color combos and things of that nature. Because my kid was a boy I used a blue background for every page. Every page. So I have a few pages that really do not work well together. Today I’m going to show you two of my early layouts and you’ll see how things have progressed.
I absolutely love these photos of my son taken after his 1st birthday. It was the milestone photograph that I started getting for him every three months after he was born. Looking at the layout now I’m sad I didn’t put more effort into it. Thankfully, digital scrapbooking has come along and I had a chance to fix it. Here’s the original layout.
A year or so later in my scrapbooking, I had come a ways, but I was still lacking some serious skill. While I kind of like this layout, it’s still kind of blah. And you can see what I mean by using blueish backgrounds on every page.
These are the two layouts I decided I’d flip. They both needed some updating and freshening up. Let’s start with the 1 year photos.
I wanted to find a kit that kind of went with my sons outfit. When I scrap, for whatever reason, I tend to try to match outfit colors. I found the perfect kit with Best Year Ever. I liked that the kit had some plain background papers that wouldn’t take away too much from my photos. I like how adding just a few more elements, like a leaf and an accordion flower, seem to brighten up the page. Add a few other little elements and this layout has a brand new life and it’s a page I’m much more happy with to represent such a fun time in my son’s life.
For the matching jammies layout, I had the perfect kits in mind. It was a merging of my mind and one of the first times I’ve ever mixed kits. For this layout I used Pigskin Party and Out Of This World. I wanted something that mixed the pajamas with the fun little football sewn on the pajamas. One thing that’s always bugged me about this picture is the way it printed off. It looks like a film of dust has settled over it, which isn’t the case. I was glad to have an opportunity with digital scrapbooking to fix the photo. I mixed the kit alphas for a fun title and decided to change the title as well to keep with the theme. Instead of matching uniforms, they have matching pajamas. I like that the new layout gives this page a nighttime, but fun filled feel as well.
I’m sure we’ve all got some layouts we’d love to redo, so why not do it? Best part about digital scrapbooking is you can make as many mistakes as you want and it won’t be permanent. Try your hand at flipping a layout – I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
